Wyoming
3 votes
Bush - 40 points
The last time this state voted Democratic..
... The Supreme's 'Baby Love' was a hit song.
Race
- Overwhelmingly white
Nothing to report.
Age
All groups - Bush
Huge wins in every group. Bush scored best among youth,
strangely enough.
Economics
All groups - Bush
Huge wins all. No significant differences.
Politics
- Above average partisanship
- Massive Republican tilt
- Awful Democratic loyalty
- Excellent Republican loyalty
- Independents tilt significantly Republican
Can you say red state? Democrats are outnumbered here by
more than 2-1. Fifty-three percent of Wyoming voters are
Republicans meaning that as long as they stick together Bush
should win without any outside help. And they do stick together. A
95% loyalty rate makes their margin unbeatable. But a majority of
independents supported the Republicans too just for good
measure. Meanwhile a horrific defection rate shrivels what's
laughingly called the Democratic Party here. More than one in
four Democrats jumped ship. Not a pretty picture.
Ideology
- Huge conservative tilt
Need I even go into this? It's a 28-point conservative tilt and Kerry
scored so badly among his liberal constituency here that he won
only 60% of their vote - an incredible figure. This means Kerry
scored better among the
GENERAL population of
Massachusetts than he did among actual LIBERALS in
Wyoming. The moderates also vote GOP in case you hadn't
figured that out.
Religion
- Protestant majority
- Significant Catholic population
At 19% of the vote, Catholics represent a larger share of the
electorate than you might think but more surprisingly they were
far less hostile to Kerry than the state as a whole. He only lost by
nine points. The Protestants however made up the difference
easily. Nearly four of every five Protestants supported Bush - a
rate seen more often in the South.
Demographics
- Overwhelmingly rural
- Small urban population
More than 90% of Wyoming is rural and Bush dominated that. He
also dominated the tiny urban population.
Other factors
Bush gets a mind-numbing 72% approval rating here. The war is
almost as popular.
