South Dakota
3 votes
Bush - 21 points
The last time this state voted Democratic...
... the Beatles released their first album in the U.S.
Race
- Overwhelmingly white
Nothing to report.
Age
All groups - Bush
Wins for Bush in every group, but the 30-44 group liked him
significantly better.
Economics
Poorest voters - Kerry
Above $15,000 - Bush
Unlike their neighbors to the north, a majority of South Dakota's
poor actually supported Kerry. Bush narrowly won the working
class however and by the middle class it was a runaway. Much
like
Oklahoma or Montana.
Politics
- Above average partisanship
- Large Republican tilt
- Terrible Democratic loyalty
- Above average Republican loyalty
- Independents tilt significantly Republican
Democratic loyalty is only slightly better than in North Dakota and
Republican loyalty a bit worse than in that state but these are
minor and meaningless differences. Democrats trail by 15 points
and a majority of the independents vote for Bush.
Ideology
- Huge conservative tilt
A 23-point conservative tilt. And the liberals aren't even very loyal.
The moderates favor Bush lightly.
Religion
- Protestant majority
- Sizable Catholic population
There is a relatively good-sized Catholic vote here. But it votes
almost exactly like the much better-sized Protestant vote. Same
as
North Dakota.
Demographics
- Heavily rural
- Sizable urban population
- Small suburban population
Two-thirds of the rural population is rural but all groups voted for
Bush at about the same rate.

The west was a bit redder than the east. Not really significant
however.
Other factors
A 62% approval rating for Bush. The war is in the upper 50s.
