New Jersey

Kerry - 7 points
The last time this state voted Republican...
... Bruce Willis starred in the first "Die Hard" film.
Race
- Heavily white
- Significant African-American population
- Significant Latino population
- Small Asian population
As elsewhere, whites voted for Bush in New Jersey. But the eight
point margin was not enough to overcome the 30 percent
non-white population. Eighty-two percent of African-Americans
supported Kerry, as did 59% of Asians and 56% of Latinos.
Age
Middle ranks - Bush
Oldest and youngest voters - Kerry
New Jersey seniors joined with their twentysomething
grandchildren to swing the state to Kerry. But Boomers and older
Gen Xers were less happy about it. Bush narrowly won ages
30-59.
Iowa provides a similar dynamic.
Economics
Under $50,000 - Kerry
Above $50,000 - heavily mixed
Hard to pick out a distinct pattern here. Kerry certainly won the
lower classes but at about $50,000, the gap narrows to a rough
tie. Nothing strange there. But oddly, it widens again in the upper
middle class to a Kerry lead, then above $100,000 it narrows to a
tie again but approaching $200,000 Kerry again takes solid
charge. This trend sharply reverses into a distinct Bush
advantage above $200,000. And odd pattern.
Politics
- Average partisanship
- Significant Democratic tilt
- Average Democratic loyalty
- Average Republican loyalty
- Independents tilt significantly Democratic
Republican loyalty is a bit higher here than Democratic but not by
much. Certainly not enough to offset a eight-point Democratic
advantage. The independents seal the deal by voting moderately
Kerry.
Ideology
- Slight liberal tilt
A rare state with a light left skew. Liberals also display better
party loyalty here and the moderates showed a partiality to Kerry.
Religion
- Predominately Catholic
- Large Protestant population
- Small Jewish population
A rare state with a Catholic plurality. As a rule in most areas,
Catholics were friendlier (or at least less hostile) to Kerry than
Protestants. But in a few states, often in the Northeast, this was
not the case. Fifty-eight percent of Catholics supported Bush in
New Jersey. Meanwhile, New Jersey was one of only six states
where the Protestant vote went to Kerry. Check out
New York,
Connecticut,
Delaware and especially Maryland for references.
Demographics
- Overwhelming suburban population
New Jersey is 97% suburbs.
Other factors
Disagreement with both Bush and the war are significant.
