Arizona
10 votes
Bush - 11 points
The last time this state voted Democratic....
... "Jerry Maguire" grossed $150 million at the box office.
Race
- Heavily white
- Significant Latino population
- Small 'other' population
Whites, who make up almost 80% of the state picked Bush by 18
points. The smaller minority populations voted Kerry by lesser
margins.
Age
All groups - Bush
Bush won all age groups, although he just barely captured the
teen/twentysomethings group.
Economics
Working class - Kerry
Poor and everybody else - Bush
The economics here were strange. Bush won both the poorest
and the richest Arizonans and he took the middle classes to
boot. But those residing in the netherworld between poor and
middle class ($15,000-$30,000) chose Kerry by a significant
margin.

Generally speaking though the poor and lower middle class
were less hostile to Kerry than folks making more than $50,000
a year.
Politics
- Average partisanship
- Strong Republican tilt
- Average loyalty on both sides
- Independents tilt slightly Democratic
With independents voting for Kerry by six points, there are fewer
closet Republicans here. Bush had to rely on the GOP numerical
advantage for his margin. He could do just that however since
Republicans outnumber Democrats by 14 points. Both parties
had a tad less than average loyalty rates of 89%. Arizona is pretty
straightforward. There are no complexities about defection rates
and independent swings. There are just significantly more
Republicans.
Ideology
- Strong conservative tilt
Thirty-eight percent of Arizonans are conservative, a bit above the
national average. Nineteen percent are liberal, which is a bit
below it.
Religion
- Majority Protestant
- Sizable Catholic population
Two thirds of Protestants voted for George W. The nearly one
quarter of the population that is Catholic also voted for him but by
a much smaller margin.
Demographics
- Majority urban
- Large suburban population
- Significant rural areas
A slight majority of Arizona's population is classified as urban.
Kerry and Bush split this group dead even. The suburbs and the
smaller rural population voted Bush.
Other factors
Most people here approve of Bush's job performance and the
war, though by a bit less than some "dead red" states.
