Race

- Overwhelmingly white - Small 'other' population

The 8% of Alaska answering "other" on race voted slightly for Kerry but the huge white population voted overwhelmingly Bush.

Poor - Kerry Everybody else - Bush

The poorest Alaskans were split almost even. But the working, middle and upper classes did not share their ambivalence and voted Bush by almost 2 to 1. Little significant differences among these groups.

Politics
- Highly partisan - Very Strong Republican tilt - Poor Democratic loyalty - Very good Republican loyalty - Independents tilt Republican
Party identification is definitely above average here with more than four of every five Alaskans identifying with a party. For most that party is the Republicans who outnumber Democrats by more than 2 to 1. Even among those few Democrats only 84% voted for Kerry - a terrible defection rate. By contrast 94% of Republicans supported there man. To pour salt in the wound, these badly outnumbered wishy-washy Democrats also saw Bush win a majority of the independent vote. He didn't need it.

Ideology
- Strong conservative tilt
Conservatives outnumber liberals by 20 points. For the record, moderates are the largest group but Bush won them, too.

Religion
- Majority Protestant - Significant Catholic population
Protestants voted against Kerry by a 3-to-1 margin. The smaller Catholic minority didn't like him much better voting 2-to-1 for Bush. Kerry's only real support came from the 30% of Alaskans who practice other or no religion. Even there he didn't win by much.

Demographics

- Majority rural - Large suburban population

There is no such thing as an urban area in Alaska. Meanwhile the suburban and rural vote showed little difference between them.

Three of every five voters approved of the war.
